What's your name and role on the team?
My name is Jessica James and I am the Assistant Human Resources Director here at Marion County BOCC.
What inspired you to join the peer support team?
I am inspired to help others through empathy and my own personal experiences. I was diagnosed with cancer when I was 36 years old and my children were only 7 and 9 years old. Navigating through the challenges of a cancer diagnosis, the unknown, treatment, and the experience I had with adjusting to a new “normal” afterwards has given me a whole new appreciation for life and wanting to help others.
What's your background or experience with peer support?
I have never been a part of a peer support group before, however I have been known for being that person that people trust to confide in. I enjoy supporting others and truly find joy in being there for people in any way that I can.
What's one piece of advice or encouragement you'd share with someone seeking support?
Never be afraid to ask for support. We all need it sometimes and it is important to find people that can listen and be there for you.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I love spending time with my fiancé Dustin, two kids (Aubrey and Brayden), and three kitties (Stella, Ryko, and Jerky (Baby Kitty)). We recently bought a camper and we are excited to camp in our RV. I love running 5k’s, and although I wouldn’t call myself fast at it, I saw a quote once that said 3.1 miles is still 3.1 miles whether you finish in 15 minutes or 45 minutes. I love trying new things and visiting new places. I also love finding joy in the small things in life like reading books, dancing around the house, laughing until I cry, and being goofy.
How can people reach out to you?
I am available by email at jessica.james@marionfl.org or phone call at 352-438-2349 or 352-843-0073 anytime you need someone to talk to. I’m in the office Monday through Friday 8am-5pm.
